Alan Rinehart has over 45 years’ experience as a professional classical guitarist. From 1983 to 2003 he was a faculty member of the music schools at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Community College. He is a co-founder of The Vancouver Guitar Quartet.
After long-time residency in Vancouver, he moved to Nelson in 2004 where he hosted “The Art and Times of the Guitar”, a weekly one hour radio show devoted to the classical guitar, for 11 seasons (176 shows) and was the coordinator of the 19th Northwest Guitar Festival, a 3 day event held in Nelson in 2009.
He currently lives in Kelowna, where he recently had the honour of performing for their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their 2016 Royal Tour visit to BC.
He has released five solo CDs and one with the Vancouver Guitar Quartet, that have received international critical praise. In 2017 he was nominated by Western Canada Music Awards for the “Best Classical Artist” award. His latest solo CD, Verdi’s Guitar was recently picked by US based Classical Guitar Magazine as one of the top 10 recordings of the year.
Alan’s concert on April 14th at Taghum Hall will take the listener on a musical journey from the 17th century to some brand new music composed for him. The melodic music of Gaspar Sanz, a 17th century Spanish guitarist, starts the evening and from there the program ventures into the world of opera with a fantasy on Verdi’s Rigoletto with the colourful works of Brazilian Heitor Villa Lobos concluding the first section. New music based on Kootenay inspired poetry by Janice Notland will be followed by tango flavoured works from Argentina finishing the concert.

Alan Rinehart’s recording, The Golden Century: Italian lute music of the 16th centurycomprises the music of the three generations of Italian composer/performers, tracing lute music in its development from dance, polyphonic and popular roots to a repertoire of stylized expressive abstract composition, music of extraordinary originality, rich harmony and exquisite detail.

One of Rinehart’s other recordings, Musical Banquet, was conceived of as the musical equivalent to a culinary banquet. Taking the dictionary definition of banquet (‘an elaborate or extensive feast”) as a starting point, the works presented follow a path through musical styles as one would enjoy a fine meal. A classic appetizer sets the ‘meal’ off, followed by an ‘antipasto’, two courses of ‘chef’s specials’ each full of many colours and ‘flavours’, a lighter dessert course and a rousing finale to send the listener home with a smile.
