CONCERT Harpist / Vocalist – Roger Helfrick September 22
September 22 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm$15 – $18
Roger Helfrick is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Edmonton, Alberta. A classically trained baritone, he accompanies himself on guitar, nylon-strung lever harp, gut-strung medieval harp and psaltery.
Helfrick’s repertoire centres on his own compositions inspired by nature, love, and the changing seasons, but also traditional folk and early music.
Roger Helfrick is a true musical alchemist. He combines the clear tones and technical precision of classical, the freely creative, improvisational playfulness of jazz, and the heart honesty of folk to craft musical magic. Intertwining his uncommonly beautiful voice with harp, guitar, or plucked psaltery, he performs music gleaned from the last 800 years of northern and western Europe, interspersed with his own nature inspired compositions and improvisations. He has released 4 CDs, receiving national and international radio play, has been a featured performer with many ensembles, including the Vancouver based Winter Harp, and performs regularly in concert.
He has released four CD’s, the most recent, Willow (2013), features traditional songs from Japan, Germany, 13th century England, and the Scottish Hebrides.
Tickets: $15 in advance at Eddy Music and Taghum Shell. $18 at the door. $10 Students. Children under 5 free.
“In all my years as a musician I have only heard a few such gorgeous voices. Roger’s singing is like velvet. His voice has this clear, transparent, warm, completely natural sound that truly makes you want to melt away. And he tells the song’s story so simply and beautifully.”
–– Lori Pappajohn, harpist, singer, director of Winter Harp
“His voice would charm a lark right out of the sky.”
–– Sean Buckley, Celtic Folk Club, Calgary
